About Altadena Homes & Living
Altadena offers country life with city advantages in an area of 8.7 square miles. This small and lovely city is part of unincorporated Los Angeles and is located north of Pasadena and east of La Canada/Flintridge. To the north of the city is the Angeles National Forest.
Residents of Altadena benefit from a laid back, countrified lifestyle. It is populated primarily by single family homes. Apartment housing is minimal, paved sidewalks are few and condominiums are a rarity. Yet the city of Los Angeles is nearby for employment, culture and entertainment.
Some property owners keep horses and proximity to the San Gabriel Mountains offers trail hiking and outdoor activities. November to June is a popular time for hikers, joggers, cyclists, dog walkers and nature lovers on the Old Mt. Wilson Toll Road that goes up to Henninger Flats where there are picnic and campground facilities. Waterfall enthusiasts can hike up to Rubio Canyon or Bonita Canyon and take photos of the beautiful scenery and tiered falls.
Do you like year- round golf? If so, you will enjoy Altadena's beautiful tree-lined golf course, complete with unobstructed mountain views. If you have arrived in Altadena from a high rain or snowfall area, you will appreciate an annual average precipitation ranging from a high of a little over 5 inches to a low of less than one inch during the entire year. Year round temperatures are delightful and mild with average January lows in the mid 50s to average August highs around seventy-five degrees.
Legendary Western author Zane Grey loved the area enough to settle in Altadena around 1918, building a large Spanish-style house in which he lived out his life. In fact, Grey was once quoted as saying “In Altadena I have found those qualities that make life worth living.”
This city is a friendly place to live. The Coffee Gallery, opened in 1998, is a popular place to eat, see shows and hang out. Original plays are featured in Altadena's theatre Americana and there is a beautiful, state-of-the-art library located in Mariposa Village.
If you have an interest in Altadena's history, you need look no further than a gentleman named John Woodbury. He purchased a 937 acre tract of land and named the area Woodbury Ranch. Woodbury established a plant nursery on the property just north of what is now Pasadena and named the acreage the “Altadena Nursery”. The name was coined as “Alta” (meaning upper in Spanish) and “Dena” from Pasadena. Woodbury established the Pasadena Improvement Company with the purpose of developing the new Altadena Subdivision.
Soon Eastern speculators began to populate the area for reasons of business opportunities and as a retirement paradise due to the fine climate and beauty of the region. Altadena was on its way to becoming the ideal community it is today.
