Arkansas, one of the south-central states, is near the geographic and population centers of the United States. Its borders adjoin Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Missouri and Oklahoma, with the Mississippi River forming the eastern border. Land Surface: 53,104 square miles. Arkansas ranks 27th among the states in size. The eastern portion of the state consists of alluvial valleys of the Arkansas and Mississippi Rivers, with agricultural land dominated by cotton, rice and soybeans. North and west portions include the Ouachita and Ozark Mountains. The state is about equally divided between highlands and lowlands and nearly half of the state is forested. Elevations in the mountainous regions vary from 200 to 2,700 feet above sea level. Mount Magazine, in the Ouachita range, is the highest point in the state with an elevation of 2,753 feet.
