About Sierra Madre Homes & Living
The lovely City of Sierra Madre is nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. As part of Los Angeles County, it is conveniently located approximately five miles from Pasadena and is an average twenty-five mile drive to work in Los Angeles proper. Sierra Madre is picturesque, with the wooded mountain range as a tranquil backdrop.
Sierra Madre values its wooded surroundings and affirmed its dedication to these values by becoming the first city in Southern California to own a wilderness preserve (1967). The picturesque location of Sierra Madre has inspired directors to film some well-know movies made here which include the classic sci-fi "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1956), "The Great Man's Lady" (1942) and "The Wedding Singer" (1998).
The city's first public building was a school house which was erected in 1882. Then, as today, education was an important factor in the lives of the residents of Sierra Madre. Based on recent statistics, nearly half of the City's residents are college graduates with nearly one-quarter possessing graduate or professional degrees.
The city enjoys a comfortably pleasant climate with average temperatures ranging from winter lows of 39 to summer highs of 85.
This is a fully interactive community with businesses, property owners, community members and various organizations working together on city improvements and cultural events. Locals and visitors alike enjoy a broad variety of year round community sponsored events. Friends of the Sierra Madre Library present an Annual Wine Tasting in February and an Annual Art Festival in May.
An annual event of importance to Sierra Madre is the Mount Wilson Trail Race. Runners nationwide are attracted to the challenge of 8.6 miles of rugged terrain. The race, coordinated by volunteers, is traditionally held on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend.
The trail traces it's origins to 1864 and a certain Benjamin D. Wilson who engaged local Mexicans and Indians to cut down trees and transform an old Indian path into what is now the Mount Wilson Trail.
In addition, atop Mount Wilson sits the famed Mount Wilson Observatory.
The beautiful wisteria vine reaches a full and magnificent bloom and is celebrated with a yearly Wisteria Festival in March which is sponsored by the Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce.
A June Faire is hosted by the British Home and a Family Fiesta is enjoyed by the local residents in June as well which is sponsored by the Passionist Fathers Monastery.
An abundance of community services are available to Sierra Madre residents, further enhancing the quality of life enjoyed by these residents. The Sierra Madre Playhouse, a creative arts group, a Rotary Club and Senior Services are among them.
Spectacular parades celebrate every Fourth of July and Pioneer Days is a celebration of the colorful history of both the city and the State of California. These and many other events, the beauty of its location and proximity to Los Angeles offer countless reasons why the City of Sierra Madre provides the living conditions and lifestyle attractive to so many.
